Happy October, month of the undead. Right on cue, Zombie Maryland travels to Lincoln. Last week, the Terrapins were savaged at home by Zombie UCLA, which, at 4-0, has already topped last season’s win total.
In theory, this should be good news for Nebraska. The Huskers have been mostly impressive on their way to a 4-0 start, putting up some numbers that shock no matter the schedule.
But NU fans remember the past decade, and this isn’t just zombie week or zombie month in college football, this has been zombie season. A week after being slain by Tulsa to kick off a coaching tenure, Oklahoma State beat Oregon. UMass, thought dead since it joined FBS in 2011, beat Rutgers to open the year and is somehow undefeated. Right now, Oklahoma, Louisville, Texas A&M and Florida State are thought to be buried relative to expectations but could reanimate. Oregon, Clemson, Wisconsin and LSU may already have.
Is Maryland dead, dead, or is it here to devour all of the good vibes from the Huskers’ start? The Terps are probably more talented than Michigan State. Their quarterback, Malik Washington, is certainly better than what NU faced a week ago. Big Ten Maryland has historically been closer to 28 Days Later than Night of the Living Dead, but it’s never easy to stay in the fight when a potential coaching change becomes the dominant topic only four weeks into the season.
That’s Nebraska’s challenge Saturday, being ready to dispatch either fast and frightening turtles or slow and staggering ones. Here’s how they do it.
