What Nebraska’s portal order tells us
The names matter but the sequence does too as Nebraska navigates the transfer portal.
Welcome to Portal Season.
It’s that time of the year where everyone has a tracker—that’s not shade, because we’re tracking it all here too—and notifications can happen at any time. Heck, even writing this newsletter is a bit of a gamble considering what might happen between the time it’s scheduled and the time it hits your inbox.
In fact, this newsletter was entirely written—a test sent to Brandon and everything—when I discovered the news that Notre Dame quarterback transfer Kenny Minchey had flipped his commitment from Nebraska to Kentucky.
There went an entire section of this newsletter, just like that.1
That section is still here—albeit different now—and the original premise still stands. What matters more than the individual names right now2 is the order in which Nebraska has chosen to act, and what that order says about how Matt Rhule and his staff are trying to stabilize the program entering 2026.
Let’s try to make some sense of it, shall we?
