The cost of a quarterback
A good quarterback out of the portal is expensive these days, which coach Matt Rhule addressed on Wednesday. Let's look at that, the portal as a whole and next steps in recruiting.
“Make no mistake: a good quarterback in the portal costs $1 million to $1.5 million to $2 million right now.”
It’s the Matt Rhule quote heard around the Name, Image and Likeness world on Wednesday, making headlines on ESPN, Fox Sports, Bleacher Report and countless others.
It’s understandable. It’s the kind of quote that grabs your attention, because it feels so unbelievable. Attracting a high-level quarterback out of the portal costs how much?
Rhule isn’t one to mince words when it comes to NIL and the portal. He’s said previously that NIL needs to be addressed — and he said it again on Wednesday — especially in terms of how programs are able to essentially buy players off of other program rosters. Plus, it’s hard to estimate how much a player’s market value actually is. It doesn’t seem to matter much right now though.
The transfer portal opens Monday, Dec. 4 and runs through Tuesday, Jan. 2. On top of that, the early signing period begins Wednesday, Dec. 20 and runs through Friday, Dec. 22.
Let’s dive in.
