The transfer portal doesn’t officially open until Jan. 2 but that doesn’t mean we’re not officially in “portal season.”

Nebraska is headed toward one of its more consequential roster resets of the Matt Rhule era, and while the window itself will only run for 15 days — Jan. 2 through Jan. 16 — the decisions shaping it are happening now. Players can announce intentions early — and many have — which means a staff can start to prepare. It also means there’s a lot to keep track of, all while trying to plan and prep for a bowl game.

Welcome to the modern cycle of college football.

What matters right now isn’t just who is leaving but where Nebraska stands, what holes are forming and how Rhule and his staff are positioned to respond.
