Nebraska’s spring plans, mat drills and everything we do and don't know
There’s a lot that we don’t know about the future of college athletics. That feels like the name of the game these days.
There’s a lot that we don’t know about the future of college athletics.
What we do know is that spring games — at least as we once knew them — are all but done. You can go ahead and add USC to the list of programs moving away from the traditional spring event.1 Instead, the Trojans will host some sort of alumni event this spring, opting for a “fan appreciation” event in the fall.
For Nebraska, the Huskers still plan to host something over that April 26th weekend. Athletic director Troy Dannen joined HuskerOnline to provide some insight on what that might look like. On the football side of things, Dannen said it will ultimately be up to coach Matt Rhule to determine what his team does and doesn’t do on that Saturday.
“There’s going to be a lot more around it,” Dannen said. “We have an internal group that involves pretty much every piece of the department, trying to figure out what that weekend looks like.”
Right now, Dannen expects there to be a flag football component. That would include alums and possibly media, as well as a women’s flag football contingency too.
He teased a volleyball matchup at the Bob Devaney Sports Center against another college team, but declined to say more.
Dannen also noted there is a soccer match already scheduled for the weekend.
“We talked about it being a celebration and I think we’ll see a little bit of everything,” he said.
Yes, there’s a lot we still don’t know about but things are becoming clearer. Let’s dive in.
